Japanese Bantams

The Japanese bantam is a fascinating breed. One of the oldest breeds on record, these quaint birds are both captivating and challenging to work with. Though their history goes back much much further in Japan and Europe, the first variety of Japanese was admitted to the APA in 1883 with other varieties to follow. Japanese bantams are also known as Chabos in Japan (or Japs as they're affectionately referred to by breeders.)

The appeal of this breed is remarkable. Long time breeder and judge, Paul Kroll describes it well in this excerpt from the forward which he wrote for Terry Wible's book THE JAPANESE BANTAM.

"I have bred and exhibited many of the over seventy breeds and close to two hundred varieties of poultry in large fowl and bantams. None has captivated my interest as has the Japanese. Their history, their beauty and their quaintness, is more than can truly be described in words here. It must be experienced, felt, observed and lived with on a daily basis. Few of us, relatively speaking, have had the pleasure of doing just that. Those who have, are true devotees. Those who have not cannot possibly understand"
